While some men are happy to have sex infrequently, for others this causes problems yet can be readily diagnosed from a simple blood test. The three best things a man can do himself to improve his sex life is to stop smoking, lose weight and reduce alcohol intake. Contrary to popular belief, some research also suggests that reducing red meat intake can improve libido, as can avoiding products naturally high in oestrogen-like compounds, such as soya.

Patch to perk up women's libido 'has little effect'

Hormone patches to boost women's sex drive may not work, according to researchers. Their report claims the long-term safety of testosterone patches is 'not proven' and they have a high rate of side-effects including hair loss, insomnia and migraines. It also found that some women had been prescribed the patches despite already having sex two or three times a month without them. 'This raises questions about whether they really had a poor sex drive in the first place,' it says.

Marriage problems, changes in social status, job dissatisfaction, lack of exercise and effects of alcohol and smoking can, in middle age, result in similar symptoms to the andropause. Professor John McKinlay says there's 'no research to support the syndrome' and advises that those experiencing symptoms should increase physical activity and diet rather than taking medication.
