Apple boss Steve Jobs has liver transplant

Steve Jobs founder of the computer firm behind the iPhone and iPod has received a liver transplant it has emerged. Mr Jobs, chief executive of Apple, had the operation around two months ago. Mr Jobs, who has previously battled pancreatic cancer in 2004, went on medical leave from the electronics giant in six months ago, to treat an undisclosed medical condition, thought to be a hormonal imbalance.

The daughter of a mentally ill patient has accused the NHS of "wasting" a liver transplant on her father after he tried to commit suicide. Nadine Woods said her father David, from Cambridge but originally from Powys, has a mental age of six after a suicide attempt in 2006. She said doctors were wrong to give him a life-saving transplant days later. But surgeons acted on the advice of a psychiatrist, who said Mr Woods had a good quality of life when healthy.

Foreign patients get NHS organs

The organs of 50 British NHS donors were transplanted into foreign patients over the past two years, it was disclosed yesterday. The bulk of the operations, which all involved liver transplants, took place at King's College Hospital and the Royal Free in London. Of the patients, 40 were Greeks or Cypriots, who are entitled as EU citizens to NHS services, including transplants.

The successful thawing and transplantation of a frozen pig's liver could bring the technique one step closer for humans. Israeli scientists, reported New Scientist magazine, used a "slow freezing" method which preserved the organ without damaging it. A UK expert said more work would be needed to prove the method was safe.

A surgeon has used a ping pong ball to keep a little girl alive after a world first liver transplant operation. The £1 plastic ball prevents Mackenzie Argaet's new liver from pressing against vital arteries, which could kill the two-year-old. Dr Albert Shun wanted to create a barrier because the adult-sized organ would otherwise be too large for her infant body.
