Gene therapy may double number of lungs fit for transplants
(The Scotsman 29/10/2009)
A PIONEERING technique could help repair lungs damaged during a patient's death and make them suitable for transplant patients, scientists have shown. The two-step procedure, which involves gene therapy, has been successfully tested on pig and human lungs. It could double the number of donor organs available to transplant patients, say the Canadian scientists. They believe it may be possible to treat other transplant organs, such as kidneys and hearts, the same way.

Eight weeks ago, Ciaran Murphy was taking what might so easily have been his last breaths. Now, thanks to the gift of two new lungs, Ciaran, who is 22 years old and a talented musician, sings for the sheer joy of living. "My mum hasn't come down from the chandeliers yet," he said. Ciaran, from Glengormley, has cystic fibrosis. Prior to his lung transplant, he could do very little without becoming tired and listless. "I needed oxygen when I was out and about walking," he said.
Transplant doctor's new lungs are up to the job
(The Scotsman 12/05/2009)
A DOCTOR who was given a new lease of life following a life-saving double lung transplant has put them to the test with a ten-mile hike to raise £10,000 for an organ donor charity. Jacqueline Didsbury, from Bathgate, suffers from cystic fibrosis, but she said her new lungs stood up well to the challenge, proving that her transplant last April has been a major success.
Scientists create 'portable lung'
(BBC 09/03/2009)
A portable lung which could help those with breathing problems lead a normal life is being developed by scientists. Researchers say their device, which oxygenates blood outside the body before it goes through the lungs, could be an alternative to transplants. The Swansea University scientists say it could take many years before the device, the size of a spectacles case, is available. Lung patients, who have seen how it would work, have welcomed the research.
Struck-off patient criticises GP
(BBC 04/03/2009)
A seriously ill man has criticised a GP who struck him off his list of patients without telling him. Ian Thompson, of Coventry, is awaiting a lung transplant and is kept alive by a combination of 25 drugs. He said he only found out he had been struck off from Wyken Medical Centre after asking for a repeat prescription.
Patient who had lung transplant cancelled 11 times undergoes operation
(Telegraph 30/12/2008)
A patient who had his lung transplant cancelled 11 times has finally undergone the operation.
Lungs 'repaired for transplant'
(BBC 19/12/2008)
Lungs have been successfully "reconditioned" to make them suitable for transplanting, a team of Canadian doctors has claimed. Up to 80% of donated lungs have sustained damage during death or intensive care treatments. The team from Toronto General Hospital was able to keep lungs stable outside the body long enough to repair them.
