Criticism over meningitis death

A hospital has been criticised by a coroner for failing to spot that a 10-year-old boy, who died from meningitis, was gravely ill. Darlington Memorial Hospital staff sent 10-year-old William Cressey home and initially refused to give him antibiotics, an inquest was told. Coroner David Mitford said delays in treatment could have contributed to William's death, on 1 March 2005.

Georgia Keeling, from Norwich, died after being rushed to hospital on Tuesday. Her parents, Paul Sewell, 21, and Tasha Keeling, 22, said they contacted health services, including NHS Direct, the swine flu helpline and the emergency services, five times after their daughter first developed a temperature on Saturday. The couple said that by Tuesday she had also developed a rash, bruising and had been sick, but their concerns that she might have meningitis were ignored.

Baby survives 'incurable' illness

A baby diagnosed with "incurable" meningitis made a miraculous recovery after her life-support machine was switched off, her mother has said. Grace Vincent was six weeks old when she contracted a rare form of the brain disease and was taken to hospital. She spent four days in intensive care before her family from Newcastle opted to switch off life support equipment. But they were stunned when the girl, nicknamed Amazing Grace, began to breathe on her own.

THE wife of former Scottish footballer Colin Hendry is fighting for her life after being struck down by a brain infection following an operation to correct botched cosmetic surgery. Denise Hendry had the operation to correct damage caused by botched liposuction in 2002, which left her with persistent health problems. Although the 16-hour operation was a success, she contracted a meningitis-type infection in her spinal cord, which spread to her brain.

A woman has told how her extremely ill daughter began singing Abba hit Mamma Mia after spending five days in a critical condition in hospital. The family of Layla Towsey, three, of Gidea Park, on the east London-Essex border, thought she was going to die after doctors diagnosed meningitis B. Her mother Katy, 23, explained that she realised her daughter had regained consciousness when she began to sing.

Row over GP out-of-hours service

A GP out-of-hours service has been criticised over claims it told a woman, who was later found to have contracted meningitis, to ring back the next day. Christine Saltmarsh, 73, who lives in Alconbury Western, Cambridgeshire, is now in a coma and suffered brain damage after contracting meningitis. Her son Nicholas Wood and daughter-in-law Samantha Wood are concerned about the delay in getting treatment.

Meningitis outbreak kills 333

AN outbreak of meningitis in Nigeria has killed 333 people in the last three months, the health minister said. "As of today, we have recorded 5323 cases with 333 deaths in 22 states," minister Babatunde Osotimehin said. The first case of meningitis was reported to the health ministry in December 2008, he said. The oil-producing nation has a population of about 146 million people in 36 states.
