Deet bug repellent 'toxic worry'

(BBC 05/08/2009)

Scientists have expressed safety concerns about insect repellents that contain Deet after observing the chemical's toxic effects in mammals. Deet has been in use for decades and is found in most of the commonly used repellents to ward off mosquitoes. Others dismissed the concerns saying deet posed no risk when used correctly. The study in the open access journal BioMed Central Biology shows deet works in the same way as paralysing nerve gases used in warfare.

Birth control

(BBC 15/06/2009)

Mosquito bites can be deadly. Anopheles mosquitoes carry the parasite that causes malaria, a disease which kills around a million people every year. Traditionally mosquito populations have been controlled by pesticides. But scientists at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are working on another method - using radiation to sterilize male mosquitoes. The sterile insect technique (SIT) has worked well in reducing tsetse flies and some other insect pests, such as fruit flies.
