NHS dystrophy care 'inadequate'

(BBC 24/08/2009)

NHS care for patients with muscle-wasting disorders is often "inadequate and not acceptable", MPs and peers say. The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Muscular Dystrophy inquiry found huge variations in life expectancy. People with the disorders also often faced long waits for wheelchairs and having to pay for physiotherapy, the report said. The government said it expected the local NHS to provide services to meet people's needs.

Treatment for dystrophy 'closer'

(BBC 20/07/2009)

Scientists have found a way to block the genetic flaw that causes the most common form of muscular dystrophy. Tests on mice found injecting them with a compound that neutralises the faulty gene's activity led to muscle cells working more effectively. The US team's work, published in Science, could be a step towards treatments to reverse the symptoms of the disease. UK experts said the study results were "exciting".

American scientists close to cure for muscular dystrophy

(The Scotsman 17/07/2009)

A BREAKTHROUGH by researchers studying the causes of muscular dystrophy (MD) could pave the way to a full or partial cure. Scientists in the US have found a way to "unblock" the genetic fault at the heart of the disease. They believe that in future it may be possible not only to halt progression of the disease, but to reverse it. Tests on mice with myotonic dystrophy - the most common form of MD in adults - showed the technique could restore the function of muscle cells.

Crunch 'to hit medical science'

(BBC 27/05/2009)

Life-saving research is threatened by the recession and government needs to step in to help medical charities weather the storm, campaigners say. Small organisations are particularly at risk as they have far fewer resources to draw upon, the Association of Medical Research Charities warns. A poll of its 117 members found 25% say they will cut their spending this year. The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign says it has already turned down 50% of research grant applications.

'Let down'

(BBC 15/09/2008)

Steven and Danielle, have congenital muscular dystrophy - a genetic muscle wasting condition present from birth. They need 24 hour care to keep them alive. But their parents say they only get a small respite package and provide most of the care themselves.

(BBC 13/05/2008)
