20% of drivers risking lives by driving with impaired vision

A study found 20% of motorists aged 35 to 55 are aware they cannot see clearly. Middle-aged men are the worst culprits, with one in three admitting they would never go for an eye test. A quarter said they "couldn't be bothered" to get a check-up, while 18% said glasses or contacts were too expensive. Astonishingly, half claimed they were worried glasses would make them look older.
Professor focused on cheap specs

A retired Oxford University physics professor has designed adjustable glasses that can be used by people in the developing world. Professor Silver's spectacles are altered by injecting tiny quantities of fluid into the lenses. The spectacles mean people can have glasses that suit their eyes without the need for a prescription.

An Australian study, compared the eyesight of young Chinese Australians and Singaporeans. It found that 30% of six-year-olds in Singapore need glasses, compared with 3% of Chinese Australians. Both groups spend the same amount of time playing video games, reading and watching television, but children in Singapore spend an average of 30 mins each day outside, compared with 2 hours in Australia.
