Plans for 'right' to private care
(BBC 10/11/2009)
Hospital patients in England may get the right to be seen privately if the NHS cannot treat them quickly enough. Hospitals have to start treating patients within 18 weeks of referral - or two weeks in the case of cancer. But ministers now want to give patients a legal right to private care - or treatment at another NHS centre if so desired - if this does not happen. The Tories, who would scrap waiting time targets, said it was an "unaffordable and uncosted" pledge.
Medical Treatment Abroad: Is it a false economy?
(Telegraph 14/08/2009)
Those who defend the NHS must acknowledge there are problems. While critics here have been forced to admit that waiting lists have tumbled over the past few years - for outpatients from 7.4 weeks in August 2007 to 4.6 weeks in January 2009 - the fact remains that the wait for elective (non-urgent) surgery such as knee and hip replacements can be long and frustrating. This delay is cited as one of the main reasons for a recent and growing trend in Britons going abroad for medical treatment.
Health boards 'paid £3m too much'
(BBC 01/05/2009)
Three Scottish health boards may have overpaid as much as £3m for a private treatment centre in the first year of its contract, according to research. The British Medical Journal, which published the findings, said all future private health contracts should be put on hold pending an investigation. Academics studied a contract between NHS Tayside and Amicus Healthcare for services at Stracathro Hospital. They said the firm was paid a set fee, however many patients it treated.
Private hospitals feeling the pinch
(The Scotsman 26/04/2009)
THE number of uninsured Scots paying for private health treatment has dropped by up to 20% because of the credit crunch, hospitals revealed yesterday. The economic downturn has prompted hundreds to turn to NHS waiting lists rather than pay out thousands for a private operation. Private health insurance companies yesterday insisted business remained "strong" but hospitals admitted a dropADVERTISEMENTin the number of uninsured patients paying up front for operations.
Number of Britons having medical treatment abroad set to double within two years
(Daily Mail 24/10/2008)
This weekend, 120 clinics from around the world will converge on London to take part in an exhibition to showcase the treatments they offer. They include a centre in Barcelona which offers heart surgery for £4,500 - some £4,000 less than it would cost in Britain, and a clinic in Malta that conducts 'nose jobs' for just under £3,000, including flights and hotel...
Overseas ops 'harm one in five'
(BBC 20/03/2008)
Combining a foreign holiday with an operation may result in health complications, a survey suggests.
