Test 'could save thousands of newborns'

Scientists have found that testing the babies' blood oxygen levels can detect a higher number of congenital heart problems than are currently picked up thorough routine examination. Around 1/3 of defects are not identified before the youngsters leave hospital. The study, which looked at almost 40,000 newborns, found the blood oxygen test increased detection rates by another 2/3.

Dr Emese Nagy, from Dundee University spent 3 minutes smiling, looking, talking to and touching 90 newborns, just like a mother would do. She then froze her face and stopped responding and noticed that the babies looked away, became visibly distressed and many started crying. When communication was restarted, the babies took some time to rebuild their trust - and slowly re-establishing eye contact.
