Expert warns of a swine flu-bird flu mix

Bird flu kills more than 60 per cent of its human victims, but doesn't easily pass from person to person. Swine flu can be spread with a sneeze or handshake, but kills only a small fraction of the people it infects. So what happens if they mix? This is the scenario that has some scientists worried. The two viruses meet - possibly in Asia, where bird flu is endemic - and combine into a new bug that is both highly contagious and lethal and can spread around the world.

Bird-flu workers risked infection

Two workers at a government laboratory scratched themselves with needles risking contamination with the H5N1 bird flu strain, it has been revealed. Both were treated with anti-viral drugs and subsequently tested negative. The incidents at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) at Weybridge in Surrey came to light following a BBC Freedom of Information request. The VLA has reported 80 incidents over five years and continually reviews risk assessments and procedures.

Major exercise focuses on pandemic flu preparations

On Thursday 23 April, a major exercise was held across Wales focusing on local preparations for a flu pandemic. Exercise Taliesin, looked at how local organisations in Wales can work together in the event of a pandemic. A wide range of organisations took part in the one-day exercise including the emergency services, local councils, NHS organisations, the Welsh Assembly Government, military, other public bodies and utility companies.

Second flu drug in pandemic plans

A second anti-viral drug is being stockpiled to treat people in the event of a flu pandemic, ministers say. The government has bought 10.6 million doses of Relenza in addition to another 7.6 million doses of Tamiflu - the drug that has been stockpiled since 2005. It comes after a UK study last year raised concerns about resistance to Tamiflu in the H5N1 strain of bird flu in south E Asia.

BEIJING: China reported its fourth human death from the H5N1 bird flu virus this month yesterday, this time in the far northwest region of Xinjiang. The Chinese Health Ministry said on its website (www.moh.gov.cn) the latest victim was a 31-year-old woman surnamed Zhang who died in the early hours of Friday.

A 16-year-old boy infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus has died in central China, the country's third fatality from the disease this month. China, stepped up bird flu precautions on fears that the virus can spread more quickly in cold weather and as an estimated 188 million people travel between cities and rural hometowns for the Lunar New Year, which typically includes feasts with poultry.

BEIJING - A 2-year-old girl in northern China has tested positive for bird flu and is in critical condition - the second case of human infection in a month. The girl fell ill on Jan. 7 in central Hunan province and was taken to a hospital by her grandparents four days later after she returned home to Shanxi province, the Health Ministry said in a notice on its Web site late Saturday.

Vietnam finds bird flu in chicken smuggled from China

Vietnam has detected bird flu in chicken smuggled from China as the illegal trade picks up ahead of the lunar New Year later this month, state media reported Tuesday.
