Smear test age limit to remain 25
(BBC 24/06/2009)
The screening age for cervical cancer will not be lowered from 25 in England, the government says. Health Minister Ann Keen said lowering the age could cause too many false positive results. She also said testing carried a risk of damage to the reproductive system which might raise the risk of future premature births in young women. But she said there would be an awareness campaign to encourage GPs and nurses to spot the signs of cancer at an earlier stage.
(The Scotsman 14/06/2009)
MORE than 500 women are being asked to repeat their cervical smear tests following doubts about whether a nurse involved in the screening was suitably qualified. Letters have been sent to the 536 affected women who had their smear tests performed in GP surgeries in Sheppey and Sittingbourne, Kent, over a two-year period from April 2007. The move follows the identification of an issue with the qualifications of a nurse, said health chiefs at Eastern and Coastal Kent NHS Trust.
