Dad putting cancer-scare leg to work

JUST a year ago, David Robertson was on top of the world. But when he started to get pains in his leg and feel lethargic just before Christmas, he went to the doctor. By the time baby Callum arrived on New Year's Day, Mr Robertson had been referred to the Western General for tests. And just as he should have been settling into his role as a new dad, his leg began to swell and he was admitted to hospital. On 12 January he was diagnosed with a type of cancer called non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Twins spurred man's cancer fight

A man who survived four bouts of cancer in 16 years said the driving force behind his fight for survival was seeing his twins grow up. David Iron, 55, from Faversham, Kent, had suffered skin cancer and non-Hodgkins lymphoma before another cancer spread from his colon to the liver. Dr Julie Sharp, of Cancer Research UK, said his recovery from three different types of cancer was "unique". Mr Iron said he was thankful to have seen his children into adulthood.
Wine boosts cancer survival rates

DRINKING wine can increase the survival of patients with lymph cancer, research suggests. Scientists who analysed data on 546 women with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma found that wine drinkers had a 76 per cent chance of living five years compared with a 68 per cent survival rate for non-wine drinkers. Beer and spirits consumption was not found to have the same effect [early research].

Cats and dogs cut their owners' cancer risk by a third, researchers say

US Researchers studied more than 4,000 patients to see if owning a pet slashed their chances of getting cancer. Dr Jodie Moffat, health information officer at Cancer Research UK said: 'This study presents some evidence that owning a pet may reduce the risk of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. However much more research is needed to provide a conclusive link.'
