"The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance," Aristotle said. People dealing with the devastating effects of mental illness say that, for them, this is especially true. A new collaboration between Tate Britain and art therapists at Oxleas NHS Trust in south-east London hopes to break down some of the psychological barriers that have hampered the use of public art to help people affected by mental illness.

While women use both sides of their brain, men only use the right half to judge if a piece of work is beautiful, a team of scientists discovered. This may reflect the different ways men and women's minds have evolved - men tend to focus on the big picture while women take in "local" details too.

Artwork created during art therapy sessions with people who have suffered serious physical illness has gone on show at the Together Our Space Gallery on London's Old Street. The Healing Mind: Art Therapy and the Body exhibition was arranged by the British Association of Art Therapists to give the general public insight into what it feels like to cope with life threatening or debilitating illness.
