500,000th heart pacemaker fitted

The 500,000th pacemaker operation in the UK has taken place - at the same hospital, St George's, London, which carried out the first such procedure in 1958. However, experts warn that although the UK was one of the first countries in the world to start implanting pacemakers, it has now fallen behind other European nations in the use of the devices.
Sandwiches 'caused fainting fits'

British doctors have released details of a woman who regularly fainted after eating sandwiches or fizzy drinks. The 25-year-old experienced the episodes for around 10 years, but numerous medical tests had failed to find an explanation. She was found to have an unusual swallowing reflex which caused her heart to stop momentarily and was fitted with a pacemaker in January.
