Uttar Pradesh in northern India has a population of more than 190 million and the world's highest concentration of polio infection. This is one of the final frontiers where the war against polio is being fought. This crippling disease is now endemic in just four countries - India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. In 1985 Rotary International spearheaded the campaign to eradicate polio and pledged to make sure all the world's children would be immunised against the disease.

The United Nations Secretary General has urged governments around the world to work towards eradicating polio. Ban Ki-moon made his comments to delegates at the Rotary International Annual Convention at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham. The organisation has raised £151m($250m) since launching a campaign in 1985 to eliminate the disease. He said polio is now only endemic in four countries, falling from 125 when the campaign began.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is joining the UK and German governments in a big initiative aimed at eradicating polio. Huge strides have been made in pushing annual cases of the crippling disease down to 1,618 worldwide. But polio persists in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria, and there are fears that if it not eradicated, cases could begin to climb again.
Bangladesh vaccinates millions in anti-polio drive

DHAKA, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Bangladesh vaccinated 22 million children against polio on Saturday, in the second round of a fresh drive against the incurable disease that re-emerged in the country nearly three years ago, health officials said. The first round of the campaign to immunise all children under 5 was held on Nov. 28, with the assistance of UNICEF and the WHO.
Vaccine 'could end Nigeria polio'

An Imperial College London team found a recently introduced polio jab is four times more effective at protecting children than previous vaccines. They say it could eradicate type 1 polio - the most common form - in Nigeria if it reaches enough children. The study appears in the New England Journal of Medicine. Nigeria is one of only four countries in the world where polio has yet to be eliminated.

A mobile phone based health application has helped to investigate and contain a polio outbreak that threatened thousands in East Africa. Health officials in Kenya used the life saving application, EpiSurveyor, after refugees fleeing violence in Somalia introduced the first case of polio into the country in more than 20 years.
