Tools are 'temporary body parts'
(BBC 22/06/2009)
The brain represents tools as extensions to the body, according to researchers writing in Current Biology. After the use of a grasping tool, participants asked to grasp an object with their own hands did so more slowly and sluggishly. Blindfolded participants also overestimated the length of their tool-using arm after the exercise. The research seems to confirm a century-old hypothesis that the brain models tools as parts of the body.
Finn creates USB 'finger drive'
(BBC 17/03/2009)
A Finnish computer programmer who lost one of his fingers in a motorcycle accident has made himself a prosthetic replacement with a USB drive attached. Jerry Jalava uses the 2GB memory stick, accessed by peeling back the "nail", to store photos, movies and programmes. The finger is not permanently attached to his hand, so it can be easily left plugged into a computer when in use.
Computer chips may 'repair' nerve
(BBC 04/02/2009)
Edinburgh University has developed a technique, which allows neurons to grow in fine, detailed patterns on the surface of tiny computer chips. Neurons are the basic cells of the human nervous system. The scientists said the development may eventually enable chips to replace damaged nerve or muscle fibres - and possibly be used in the development of prosthetics in the future.
Student fitted with bionic hand
(BBC 19/01/2009)
A student who had his hand ripped off in an accident has become the second person in the UK to be fitted with a revolutionary bionic replacement. Evan Reynolds, 19, from Haslemere, Surrey, said it took him minutes to get used to the prosthetic, which has five separately working fingers. Mr Reynolds lost his left hand when the car he was in scraped a post in 2006.
'Pioneering' arm for 7/7 victim
(BBC 09/12/2008)
A woman severely injured in the 7 July bombings has a prosthetic arm fitted to her bone and skin in "breakthrough" surgery.
Micro needles aid bionic advances
(BBC 18/11/2008)
Engineers in Wales have helped to develop micro technology which could lead to a bionic man becoming reality. It is hoped their micro-needle array sensors, which are around the size of a matchstick head, will help amputees move artificial limbs with brain power. They sit on the brain and send out nerve impulses to prosthetics.
