Darth Vader voices scare young girls but they get to love them

Young girls are intimidated by deep voices such as Darth Vader but get to love them as they get older, new research has found. The St Andrews University study found the fear soon changes to curiosity at puberty, when they are drawn to deep tones such as soul singer Barry White. Psychologists found teenager girls had strong preferences for boys who sounded most like the so-called Walrus of Love. The study of more than 300 young girls, aged 11 to 15.

Staff at a GP surgery in Derbyshire are trying to help nine and ten-year-olds understand more about puberty. The surgery runs special sessions twice a year for the children and their parents. The scheme began because of concern about an apparent increase in unwanted pregnancies among teenagers. I went along to one of the hour-long events. The surgery in Brimington is on the edge of Chesterfield.
