WHEN Ali Campbell used to head off to Jamaica each winter it wasn%u2019t just to feel the reggae vibe that infused the music of his former band UB40. He also went for some much-needed sun as he has suffered from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) for as long as he can remember. A type of winter depression, SAD strikes from September until April and peaks during mid-winter. Symptoms, which include lethargy, sleep problems, overeating and irritability.

Every year around this time I start to feel a low-level depression coming on. I feel lethargic, miserable and pessimistic about the year ahead and find it hard to motivate myself to do anything except drag myself into work.
