Sexual abuse

(BBC 17/11/2009)

This week, the French National Assembly is debating a bill on the treatment of re-offenders. One of the issues likely to be discussed is chemical castration. This is currently voluntary in France, but some are calling for it to become obligatory after a convicted sex offender attacked and killed a jogger. In September, Polish MPs passed legislation making it obligatory to chemically castrate certain sex offenders. So what is life like for those who undergo chemical castration treatment?

Off the game

(BBC 06/09/2009)

Just over a year ago Jo was a prostitute in Northampton. She faced daily abuse and violence and had been badly beaten by customers. Her four children had all been taken away from her and she was addicted to crack cocaine after seven years of selling sex. Today she is finally free of drugs, off the streets and due to start a course to train as a legal secretary.

Beer goggles 'don't disguise age'

(BBC 20/04/2009)

University of Leicester researchers showed 240 people, half of whom had been drinking, digitally-altered images of females meant to be 13, 17 or 20. The paper for the British Journal of Psychology said most overestimated ages no matter how much they had drunk. The researchers say it suggests men who have sex with underage girls should not be able to use alcohol as a defence.

Sex abuse calls to ChildLine soar

(BBC 09/02/2009)

A record number of children told ChildLine they were sexually abused last year - with more than 30 such calls a day being made. More than 13,000 youngsters told the telephone helpline that they were victims of sex abuse, a 50% increase on the figure three years ago. ChildLine says it was only able to answer two-thirds of calls made to it.

Czechs criticised over castration

(BBC 05/02/2009)

The Czech Republic has been strongly criticised by Europe's leading human rights body for continuing to surgically castrate male sex offenders. The Council of Europe said castrations had sometimes been performed without warnings of side effects and on men not capable of making an informed decision. Those requesting castration feared life in jail if they did not do so, it said.
