Misconceptions about sexual health are widespread

(BBC 20/11/2009)

One in four young people mistakenly believes it is impossible to get pregnant through having sex standing up, a survey shows. The Department of Health and Department for Children, Schools and Families commissioned the poll to highlight misconceptions about safe sex. The poll, of 2,000 people aged 16-50, found 19% were unaware a woman could get pregnant while having a period. A similar number thought withdrawing before ejaculation was completely safe.

Row as Spanish teenagers get lessons in 'self-love'

(BBC 13/11/2009)

A Spanish region's new approach to sex education has provoked anger by suggesting children be taught "self-exploration and self-pleasure". The government of Extremadura launched a campaign based around the slogan "pleasure is in your own hands", which gives advice on masturbation. The scheme has angered Spain's Roman Catholics and conservative media. But youth workers have also been angered by the row, saying their plans were taken out of context.

Sex education opt out is reduced

(BBC 05/11/2009)

Parents' right to pull their children out of sex education classes in England is being ended once the pupils turn 15. The change means all pupils will get at least one year of sex and relationship education before their 16th birthday once it becomes compulsory in 2011. Under these plans, even faith schools will have to cover areas such as same sex relationships and contraception. However, governing bodies will still be able to ensure classes reflect the religious ethos of the school.

Sex jokes

(BBC 04/11/2009)

Vinh, a 24-year-old man, says his parents never talked to him about sex. "But they would make jokes about it so that I know what they expect from me," he says. Vinh is from Hue, one of the most traditional cities in Vietnam, but this attitude is found throughout the country, according to the authors of the first survey into sex and sexual attitudes carried out in the communist state for 50 years. By turning it into a joke some parents and children find it is easier to talk about sex.

Most modern safe sex campaigns like the recent Hitler AIDS adverts use provocative or sexualised images to get attention. But there are other ways to get the message across [contains images from campaigns].

Report shows how many people you've slept with

(World health - EU Monitor 24/09/2009)

The average British man or woman has slept with 2.8 million people - albeit indirectly, according to a report by news agency AFP. A British pharmacy chain has launched an online calculator which helps you work out how many partners you have had, in the sense of exposure to risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STIs). The ready reckoner tots up the numbers based on your number of partners, then their previous partners, and their former lovers, and so on for six "generations" of partners.

Genes blamed for early first sex

(BBC 15/09/2009)

The fact that children raised in homes without a dad have sex earlier is down to their genes, say US researchers. The study tested for genetic influences as well as factors such as poverty, educational opportunities and religion. The more genes the children shared, the more similar their ages of first intercourse regardless of whether they had an absent father or not. A spokesman for the charity, Brook, said children needed early education to help them make informed choices.

Right time?

(BBC 30/07/2009)

Single mum Debbie prides herself on her close relationship with Shauny, but has been struggling with the fact that her eldest daughter is growing up and wants to have her boyfriend over to stay. She fears that Shauny may enter a sexual relationship before she is ready and thinks that 16 is still too young. In the last 20 years, the number of sexually active girls under the age of consent has risen from one in 20 to one in three.

Life lessons

(BBC 20/07/2009)

Zeba Raman is a 28-year-old Pakistani sex worker. Born into the profession in Karachi's red light district of Napier Road, she plies her trade all over the city. She is celebrating the launch of an initiative to promote health awareness among sex workers. "We are now revealed to society," says Ms Rahman. But prostitution remains illegal and anathema to many in Muslim-majority Pakistan. It is an ever-present fact of life, but never really acknowledged.
