Joint Clinic: 'I get pains in my shins during my training for the London marathon'

I am 38 and planning to run in the London marathon next year. I am already training hard. However, I have started to get pain in the front of my shins soon after I start running. I have taken these to be "shin splints". A friend told me not to try and run through the pain as it will get worse and can lead to something called "compartment syndrome". Should I take heed?
