Shingles 'increases chance of stroke'

(The Scotsman 09/10/2009)

HAVING shingles can increase the risk of a stroke by almost a third, according to scientists. The risk is significantly greater when the infection, caused by the chickenpox virus, involves the eyes. Shingles - properly known as herpes zoster - is a painful skin rash that can occur years after a bout of chickenpox, when the dormant virus reawakens.

Shingles 'risk' of arthritis drug

(World health - EU Monitor 18/02/2009)

Some popular treatments for rheumatoid arthritis could increase the risk of the painful condition shingles, a German study suggests. Anti-TNF (anti-tumour necrosis factor alpha) therapy drugs can slow the progress of disease and help to reduce some of the worst symptoms.
