665 million in India defecate in open: UN

Highlighting that safe disposal of faeces is critical for reducing the number of diarrhoea cases, United Nations on Thursday stressed on the need for hygienic sanitary practices to combat the disease, the second greatest killer of children after Malaria. Out of a total of 2.5 billion people worldwide that defecate openly, 665 million belong to India. Some 88 per cent of diarrhoeal deaths worldwide are attributable to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.
Move to cut child diarrhoea death

An international initiative has been launched to cut the number of children who die from diarrhoea around the world. The World Health Organization and UNICEF said urgent action was needed to combat a disease which kills an estimated 1.5m children a year. They have drawn up a seven-point plan to tackle the problem, which is published in The Lancet. It includes zinc treatment, promotion of breastfeeding and vaccinations.
Parents warned on 'flat' fizzy drinks
