Poisoning-accused KFC 'purged records'

SALES records and CCTV footage of purchases made at a Sydney fast food outlet the day a customer claimed she developed salmonella poisoning have been purged, a court has been told. Monika Samaan, now 11, is suing KFC - through her father Amanwial Samaan - claiming she developed salmonella poisoning from a Twister he bought her at a KFC restaurant in 2005. KFC denies being responsible for her illness, maintaining there is no sales data to prove a Twister was purchased by Mr Samaan.
Woman dies after salmonella bug

An elderly resident of a care home in Wearside has died in hospital after contracting salmonella. The woman, believed to be in her 70s, was one of eight staff and residents at the Millum House Care Home in Roker, Sunderland, who had become infected. The woman was admitted to hospital and received treatment but later died. Another resident is still receiving hospital treatment. The others, three members of staff and four residents, have recovered.
Low levels of contamination found in ready-to-eat speciality meats sold in UK

A new report published today highlights that 99% of ready-to-eat speciality meats sold in the UK are safe to eat. However the study also reveals that a very small proportion of the meats contained Salmonella or unsafe levels of Listeria monocytogenes. A total of 2359 ready-to-eat speciality meat samples (continental sausages, cured/fermented, and dried meats) were collected from markets and specialist food shops in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Poor egg handling practices in restaurants and takeaways could be putting UK consumers at risk, reveals a new report from the HPA and LACORS. Councils across the UK collected hundreds of egg mix samples from restaurants, takeaways, bakeries, cafés and sandwich bars, along with information on hygiene practices. Although the study revealed low levels of Salmonella contamination in egg mix samples (0.13%), 14% of takeaways were not aware of key food safety practices for the use of egg mixes.
Peanut Plant Fined $14.6M For Salmonella

(AP) The shuttered Texas plant owned by a peanut company blamed in a US salmonella outbreak that sickened nearly 700 people was fined a record $14.6 million on Thursday. The state fined Plainview Peanut Corp. LLC over violations that include unsanitary conditions, product contamination, illnesses linked to peanuts from the plant and operating for almost four years without a food manufacturer's license, the Texas Department of State Health Services said.

More than 125 US products (involving 70 companies), including a few pet foods, have so far been included in recalls prompted by the nationwide Salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter. Consumer products recalled include cookies, crackers, candy, and ice cream. The FDA has said no national peanut butter brands sold in retail stores have been tied to the outbreak.
