News items on 'Autistic Disorder (autism)'
(BBC 06/11/2009)
France's Minister for Europe, Pierre Lellouche, has accused David Cameron of "castrating" Britain's position in Europe, adding that his approach was "pathetic". He has since said his use of the word "pathetique" has been misunderstood and can mean sad or unfortunate in French. But it was his use of the word "autism" which caused most offence. He says he did not realise the word "autism" could been seen as offensive in English and has retracted his remark.
Adults with autism 'cast adrift'
(BBC 15/10/2009)
Adults with autism in England are often not being diagnosed or supported properly, MPs say. The Commons' Public Accounts Committee said the lack of understanding about the condition among GPs and social care staff was a key problem. But MPs also attacked the arrangements in place to oversee the transition from child to adult services which led to people being "cast adrift". The government said a new strategy for autism would be published next year.
Autistic jobseekers 'written off'
(BBC 13/10/2009)
People with autism are condemned to financial hardship by poor employment and benefits support, a charity says. The National Autistic Society (NAS) is calling for a national strategy to help people with autism into work. NAS chief executive Mark Lever said people with autism experienced "anxiety, confusion, delays and discrimination" when using services. The Department for Work and Pensions said it was "determined to provide the best support possible" to them.
Mother seeks more autism support
(BBC 16/09/2009)
MSPs have heard concerns that children with autism are often excluded from school and fall behind because their behaviour is taken for insubordination. An Aberdeen parent has sent a petition to Holyrood seeking a review of the education service for children with varying degrees of autism. Annette Masson said too few school staff have enough time and training. The Scottish Government said laws were in place requiring local authorities to support children with autism.

In one evening, he memorised every name and number from A to G in the phone book. While waiting for a meal in a restaurant, he committed the entire tableside jukebox to memory. A dropped box of toothpicks? One glance and he is certain that 246 have spilt on the floor. His mind was like a computer and, for years, Dustin Hoffman's Rain Man character has often been the first reference point for autism.
'Patients want clear advice not non-directiveness'
(BBC 05/08/2009)
Many people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience sensory overloads. Bright lights, loud sounds, or rough materials can be so much more intense for them than for most of us, that they cause intense pain or discomfort. As a parent of a child recently diagnosed with ASD, I have had a similar experience trying to get good quality information about the condition. What you need after that is reliable information, and co-ordinated clinical care and social support.
Autism 'hits body language skill'
(BBC 05/08/2009)
Problems processing visual information may stop those with autism interpreting body language, harming their ability to gauge others' emotions, a study says. Researchers say people with autism have problems recognising physical displays of emotion, but also general difficulty perceiving certain sorts of motion. They suggest in Neuropsychologia this may contribute to problems with social interaction, characteristic of autism. The National Autistic Society said the UK study was an interesting one.
(BBC 17/07/2009)
A computer company in Denmark which has made huge strides in employing workers with autism is expecting to begin work in the UK soon. Specialisterne was started by a Danish man whose own son has autism. Thorkil Sonne now employs more than 40 people with autism. He is finalising plans to set up a branch in Glasgow in the coming months. He hopes to hire 50 workers in the first three years of operating in Scotland.
Problem pregnancy 'autism risk'
(BBC 01/07/2009)
Complications during pregnancy and giving birth later in life may increase the risk of having a child with autism, a review of dozens of studies suggests. Researchers found the bulk of studies into maternal age and autism suggest the risk increases with age, and that fathers' age may play a role too. The mothers of autistic children were also more likely to have suffered diabetes or bleeding during pregnancy.
