Ritalin backed as brain-booster
(BBC 19/06/2009)
Healthy people should be able to take the anti-hyperactivity drug Ritalin to boost brain power, a UK ethicist says. Bioethics expert Professor John Harris, of the University of Manchester, said if the drug was safe for children, adults should also be able to take it. Writing on the British Medical Journal website, he said many students were already using the drug - which is illegal without prescription in the UK. A US expert said there were too many risks for it to be more widely used.
(BBC 23/10/2008)
Students have long used plentiful cups of coffee, as well as caffeine in pill form, to stay up revising late into the night. But now some are going a step further and taking "study drugs". At the top of the list of study drugs are Ritalin, a drug prescribed to children who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), and Modafinil, a narcolepsy drug.
More using prescription drugs to boost brain power
(BBC 13/10/2008)
Increasing numbers of people are using prescription drugs like Ritalin to boost alertness and brain power, say experts. Up to a fifth of adults, including college students and shift workers, may be using cognitive enhancers, a poll of 1,400 by Nature journal suggests. Neuropsychologist Professor Barbara Sahakian of Cambridge University said safety evidence is urgently needed.
