NHS should pay for patients to be treated abroad House of Lords rules

In a report on cross-border healthcare, the Lords backed European plans to formalise the system under which EU citizens can travel to other member states for treatment. They said a patient's healthcare providers in Britain should pay fees directly to the hospital carrying out treatment in another state, rather than requiring the patient to pay and then claim reimbursement later.

How lovely, we thought, to take my mum to the Cote d'Azur in the South of France to aid her recuperation after six months of chemotherapy. Buoyed by dreams of lounging in a herb garden by the Mediterranean, I phoned insurers who marketed themselves as 'cancer specialists' to seek travel insurance for Mum. It was a signal for the insurers to rub their hands with glee.
