Women 'fight off disease better'

Men really do have an excuse for supposedly being wimpy about coughs and colds - their immune systems are not as strong as women's, research suggests. A Canadian study indicates that the female sex hormone oestrogen gives women's immune systems added bite at fighting off infection. Oestrogen seems to counter an enzyme which blocks the inflammatory process. The McGill University study appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

A herbal medicine used by Zulus to counter colds and flu has been given the go-ahead for use in Britain. A key ingredient from the geranium plant - kaloba - has been passed for sale in Britain. However, because it is a herbal remedy the manufacturers, do not have to prove it is effective - just that it's safe.

More Scots visiting chemists for advice on health

A YouGov study, shows four out of five Scots would consult their pharmacist for advice ranging from colds and flu to contraception. Minor ailments topped the list of reasons people consulted pharmacists, with 76 per cent seeking advice on hay fever, coughs and colds.
