How my mum baffled medics

(Daily Express 03/11/2009)

IT IS not unusual for elderly patients suffering urinary tract infections to hallucinate, talk gibberish and be unable to answer simple questions. "UTIs are a very common cause of confusion, which is made worse if the patient is on medication for a pre-existing condition or is already slightly confused, " says Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners. "Confusion can be to the point where the patient experiences quite bizarre mental delusions. "

Boy's 'swine flu' a kidney case

(BBC 04/08/2009)

A mother from South Gloucestershire is claiming the country's pre-occupation with swine flu almost cost her son his life after he was misdiagnosed. Callum Meaker, 13, was told he had swine flu after calling an NHS helpline with a high temperature, but it turned out he had a serious kidney infection. He was rushed into hospital several days later where he spent almost a week recovering before being discharged. A further scan is now required to see if there has been any lasting damage.

Hospital bugs 'being neglected'

(BBC 12/06/2009)

The NHS in England is neglecting the threat from many healthcare-acquired infections not covered by government targets, a watchdog has warned. Efforts to tackle MRSA and Clostridium difficile have been a success, but they account for only about 15% of cases, the National Audit Office said. Pneumonia and urinary tract infections are among those which deserve more attention, its report said. The Care Quality Commission said they would "keep up the pressure" on trusts.
