HRT 'could double the threat of skin cancer'

(Daily Mail 26/02/2009)

Women who undergo hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for the menopause for more than six months at a time are twice as likely to develop a malignant melanoma, researchers discovered. The study, published in the journal Annals of Oncology, compared nearly 800 Dutch women diagnosed with a melanoma between 1991 and 2004 with a group of 4,000 cancer-free women.

HRT cancer link 'confirmed'

(BBC 05/02/2009)

New evidence of a link between hormone replacement therapy and a raised breast cancer risk suggested by US researchers. They found breast cancer risk fell sharply when women stopped taking HRT. A UK expert said a 50% drop in HRT use in recent years had probably stopped up to 1,000 breast cancer cases a year. But other experts said the fall in breast cancer rates may be due to other factors.

HRT 'can shrink women's brains'

(BBC 13/01/2009)

Some forms of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can slightly shrink the brains of post-menopausal women, a US study has suggested. The findings may help explain previous work linking HRT to an increased risk of memory loss and dementia. Researchers carried out brain scans on 1,400 women aged 71 to 89. But UK experts said the study, published in Neurology, had flaws.

HRT increases the chance of needing joint replacement, researchers claim

(Daily Mail 28/10/2008)

Women taking HRT are more likely to need joint surgery, claim researchers. They had a 58 per cent extra risk of requiring a new knee than those who had never used the therapy.

Now HRT can REDUCE the risk of breast cancer in women

(Daily Mail 25/09/2008)

Researchers looked at hormone replacement therapy or HRT in post-menopausal women with a BRCA1 gene mutation, which greatly increases their chances of developing breast cancer. Among 472 women from nine countries, those who used HRT were 42 per cent less likely to develop breast cancer than those who did not, according to the research by Dr Steven Narod in Toronto.

Cancer and heart disease scares 'put one million women off HRT a year'

(Daily Mail 20/09/2008)

More than a million women a year are missing out on the benefits of hormone replacement therapy, a leading doctor warns. Prescriptions for HRT have fallen from 6.2million in 2001 to a predicted 2.6million for this year as a result of alarming research findings. In May the International Menopause Society issued a review showing HRT is safe for women aged 50 to 59 in the early menopause.

HRT helps insomnia, aching joints and sex-life in women - even years after the menopause, say scientists

(Daily Mail 22/08/2008)

Women gain significant benefits in quality of life from taking HRT even years after the menopause, say researchers. Older women enjoy improvements in many aspects of health when taking Hormone Replacement Therapy.

The popular HRT pill that 'doubles the risk of stroke'

(Daily Mail 14/08/2008)

Older women have been warned that a popular HRT pill can more than double the risk of suffering a stroke. Tibolone raises the odds of a stroke in the over 60s, say researchers.

HRT study 'highlights pills risk'

(BBC 11/07/2008)

Using HRT patches instead of pills could cut the risk of gallbladder complications, a study says.
