Zimbabwe cholera 'to top 100,000'

The number of cholera cases in Zimbabwe is expected to reach 100,000 this week, according to the Red Cross. While the infection rate has slowed, the underlying causes of Africa's worst cholera epidemic in 15 years have not been fixed, warned the aid group. So far, 98,309 cases have been reported, with some 4,283 deaths, said the Red Cross in a report. The outbreak, which began last August, has been fuelled by Zimbabwe's poor water, sanitation and health systems.

The number of people suffering from cholera in Zimbabwe has risen to more than 69,000 cases, UN figures show. The World Health Organisation said the epidemic has killed 3,397 people out of 69,317 cases since August, the deadliest outbreak in Africa in 15 years. WHO figures released on Wednesday showed an increase of 57 deaths and 1,579 new infections since Tuesday. The outbreak is the biggest and deadliest in Africa in 14 years.

The death toll from Zimbabwe's cholera epidemic rose to 2225 yesterday, with more than 42,000 others infected. The UN said 1550 new cases were being reported every day and lack of clean water and proper hygiene was causing re-infection after treatment. It said an operation to feed millions of Zimbabweans meant aid workers were competing for resources such as vehicles and fuel.
