Deficient diets to blame for rise in childhood scurvy

(The Scotsman 08/11/2009)

SCURVY, once the scourge of the sailors in the age of sail, is increasing among British schoolchildren. In 2004-5, 61 children were admitted to hospital with scurvy in England. But by 2007-8 the figure had risen to 94. The condition results from a deficiency of vitamin C, usually through a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in their diet. The debilitating disease was common in the 17th century among sailors deprived of fresh food during long months at sea.

Cure for scurvy discovered by a woman

(Telegraph 05/03/2009)

Ebot Mitchell concocted a remedy in 1707, some 46 years before physician James Lind realised vitamin C could cure the condition. A newly discovered handwritten book by Mrs Mitchell suggested extracts from various plants mixed with a plentiful supply of orange juice, white wine or beer. Had the remedy been known earlier in the 18th century, it could have saved thousands of lives
