Expert warns of risks in high doses of supplements

(The Scotsman 19/10/2009)

Professor Martin Wiseman, medical and scientific adviser for the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), said it was difficult to predict the impact vitamin supplements had on the chances of cutting cancer. While low dose supplements can be a "valuable safety net", high doses could be harmful. Research over the past few years has suggested some vitamins can actually increase the risk of some cancers. For example, beta carotene can increase the risk of lung cancer in people who already smoke.

Coke water adverts 'misleading'

(BBC 07/10/2009)

Advertisements for vitamin-enriched water made by Coca-Cola have been criticised by an industry watchdog. Posters and leaflets on Vitaminwater had "misleading" claims about nutritional benefits, the Advertising Standards Authority said. Slogans such as "more muscles than brussels" and "keep perky when you're feeling murky" were used. The ASA rejected the drinks company's argument that the advertising was "humorous and irreverent".

People who eat a healthy diet get all the vitamins they need from their food.

Ancient Israel was far from "the land of milk and honey," and instead people suffered from the lack of a balanced diet, according to a theologian. Dr Nathan MacDonald, an Old Testament lecturer at St Andrews Univ, used biblical texts and archaeological evidence to study the ancient diet. He concluded that there were frequent famines and people's meals often lacked vitamins and minerals.

We took up to '£20 of vitamins a month - then went cold turkey

(Daily Mail 29/11/2008)

Supplements are believed by millions to be an easy way to maintain health. 1/3 of UK population pops at least one vitamin pill a day, and the industry is worth in excess of £330million a year. Studies suggest vitamin supplements are ineffective and may even increase the risk of illness. We asked 3 devotees who spend up to £200 a year on supplements, to stop taking them for a month...

Are vitamin supplements actually bad for us?

(The Independent 25/11/2008)

Next time you visit your local chemist, pause in the aisle containing vitamin supplements, and take in the quantities and varieties of pills and potions on offer. Tiny boxes and bottles stretch as far as the eye can see, affirming that even in these cash-strapped times, the gorging of such "miracle cures" continues to be big business.

Vitamin C 'slows cancer growth'

(BBC 05/08/2008)

An injection of a high dose of vitamin C may be able to hold back the advance of cancers, US scientists say.

Vitamins 'may shorten your life'

(BBC 16/04/2008)

A major review suggests vitamin supplements do not prolong life and could even lead to a premature death.
