THE long-running question of whether workers absent due to ill health are entitled to take holidays and/or be compensated in lieu of holidays not taken was decided in the European Court recently. In a controversial judgment, the European Court of Justice ruled that workers do not lose their right to holiday pay while off sick.
Ministers back 'fit note' plans

Employee "fit notes" are to be brought in as part of government efforts to cut money lost to the economy from workplace absenteeism. The idea is for GPs in England to spell out those tasks workers can perform rather than the traditional "sick note" focusing on what they cannot do. There'll also be support to help people back to work with firms encouraged to promote healthier living.
Hard times have workers too afraid to call in sick

SCOTS workers are less likely to call in sick, amid fears over their jobs in the current economic climate, research out today will suggest. Dubbed "presenteeism", a survey found staff are increasingly reluctant to take time off work through illness. The trend has been attributed to the financial slowdown, as workers are keen to prove their commitment to their jobs.
Sick leave 'link to early death'

Among 6,500 civil servants, those with long sick leave over three years had a 66% higher risk of early death. The highest mortality risk was seen in those who had been off work with heart disease, stroke or related conditions who had more than four times the risk of death than those who had no long sickness absences. Absences due to common respiratory conditions also had higher risk association...
Fraud inquiry into fake sick notes sold on web

The NHS fraud squad is investigating a website that sells fake doctors' sick notes for £25 each.
