Blood bar

(BBC 27/10/2009)

A lifetime ban on gay and bisexual men from giving blood is under review, following calls from campaigners that the policy is unfair and misplaced. So which groups are prevented from donating on grounds of sexual behaviour? The public is often being urged to give blood, to help those that need it, but the adverts are not directed at those deemed too high-risk to donate.

Call for new blood donors before virus affects supply

(The Scotsman 29/07/2009)

HEALTH officials are preparing for blood supplies to be hit by the flu pandemic as more cases emerge in the winter. People who are ill, including those with flu, cannot give blood, raising the possibility that if a large number of donors are affected, supplies to the NHS could drop. The Blood Transfusion Service in England has started advertising for new donors ahead of any increase in flu activity. In Scotland, the service said supplies were currently good.

Impressive rise in Scots blood donors

(The Scotsman 02/06/2009)

THE number of Scottish blood donors has risen by 10,000 since an awareness campaign was launched a year ago. Health chiefs now want to build on this with a similar rise in the year ahead. Blood donor week 2009 began yesterday and the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) will use this to launch a month of activity.

Blood donor age limit is scrapped

(BBC 16/12/2008)

The age limit which prevents regular blood donors from continuing to give blood beyond their 70th birthday has been scrapped. The NHS's Blood and Transplant authority said older donors were healthier and fitter than in the past. This could see an extra 15,000 donations a year across the UK. There are currently 1.414 million registered blood donors in the UK, with one in ten aged 60 or above.

Appeal for more platelet donors

(BBC 02/12/2008)

An appeal for more platelet donors has been made by the National Blood Service as supplies fall to their lowest level over the Christmas period. Platelets are very small cells that work as the body's clotting agent. The supplies need to be constantly renewed as they only have have a five-day shelf-life.

Student unions ban blood donation advertising posters... because they discriminate against gay men

(Daily Mail 11/11/2008)

Two student unions have outlawed the National Blood Service, claiming it discriminates against gays. Newcastle and Sunderland Universities' unions have banned it from advertising in their buildings. The service does not allow active homosexuals to donate as they are at 'high risk' of carrying blood-borne viruses including HIV and Hepatitis B, although this policy may be relaxed in future.

More people cleared to give blood

(BBC 26/09/2008)

Some people with diabetes and high blood pressure are to be allowed to donate blood for the first time. A committee of experts has ruled it is safe for these groups to give blood, even if they are taking medication to control their condition. However, donors must have no complications or underlying medical conditions - and people taking insulin for diabetes remain barred.
