Hope over Down's learning problem
(BBC 19/11/2009)
US research has raised hopes of developing a drug therapy to reverse the learning problems associated with Down's syndrome. At birth children with Down's syndrome are not developmentally delayed, but memory problems often mean they soon tend to fall behind. The new study, in mice, pinpoints the key defects in the brain, and suggests a possible way to tackle them. The study appears in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
Delayed motherhood leads to sharp rise in Down's syndrome
(The Scotsman 27/10/2009)
THE number of babies diagnosed with Down's syndrome has risen sharply in the past 20 years %u2013 largely due to women delaying motherhood. The increasing number of older mothers is behind a 71 per cent rise in the number of babies with the condition - from 1,075 diagnoses in 1989-90 to 1,843 in 2007-8. However, the number of babies born with Down's has remained fairly static over the same period due to improved screening and subsequent abortions, the study found.
Down's dementia risk 'overlooked'
(BBC 05/10/2009)
Not enough is being done to support the growing number of people with Down's syndrome who have dementia, say campaigners. As many as 50% of all people with Down's in their 50s may now have Alzheimer's disease, as they often get the condition much earlier than others. But critics say the issue was barely mentioned in a recent green paper on dementia care in England. However, ministers said action was being taken to reform dementia care.
New light on Down's cancer link
(BBC 21/05/2009)
Scientists may have solved the mystery of why people with Down's syndrome seem to have a lower risk of some cancers. The extra copy of chromosome 21 which causes Down's appears to contain a gene that protects from solid cancerous tumours, tests on mice suggest. The gene seems to interfere with signals a tumour relies on to grow. The finding raises hope of new ways to prevent and treat cancer. The study by the Children's Hospital of Boston appears in the journal Nature.
The prejudice persists over Down's Syndrome
(Telegraph 21/03/2009)
We have yet to recognise that Down's Syndrome is not something which has to be avoided says Alasdair Palmer.
(BBC 17/03/2009)
Otto Baxter is 21 and has Down's syndrome. His mother Lucy thinks he should have all the experiences that other young men of his age have - including sex. Otto and Lucy spoke to BBC Radio 5 live's Victoria Derbyshire show. Lucy Baxter says she has only ever wanted her son to lead an "ordinary" life. "I wanted him to do exactly the same as everybody else so I was very keen he went to a mainstream school," she said.
Mouse Down's 'eased in the womb'
(BBC 27/11/2008)
Down's starves developing nerve cells of two key proteins, leading to problems with mental development. But when US researchers injected the proteins into mice pregnant with "Down's" pups, the offspring seemed free of these problems. However, experts warned success in mice was no guarantee of the same in humans.

Down's births rise despite tests
(BBC 24/11/2008)
More Down's syndrome babies are being born than before pre-natal screening became widespread. The UK saw 749 Down's births in 2006, up from 717 in 1989 when tests came in. The Down's Syndrome Association surveyed 1,000 parents to find out why they'd continued with the pregnancy. A third cited religious or anti-abortion beliefs and 30% felt life had improved for people with Down's.
It happened to me: I decided to keep my Down's baby
(Daily Mail 22/11/2008)
When I married my second husband, Paul, two years ago, we knew we wanted children, so I was ecstatic when I fell pregnant in September last year. Erin was born with Down's syndrome, and while I know her life is likely to be tougher than for 'normal' children, I will do all in my power to smooth her way in life. She deserves it.
