New skin 'may help burns victims'

French researchers say they have found a way of using human embryonic stem cells to create new skin which could help serious burns victims. They say the stem cells grew into fully formed human skin 12 weeks after being grafted on to mice. The researchers, writing in the Lancet journal, say the skin could solve the problems of rejection that burns patients currently face. One stem cell expert said they had made an important advance.

AT LEAST 100 people are killed by sunbeds each year in the UK, and many hundreds more suffer cancer or disfiguring injuries, a hard-hitting report revealed yesterday. Experts led by a Glasgow-based doctor called for all commercial sunbed operators to be properly regulated, licensed and inspected. The report - from the Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (Comare) - follows two high-profile cases of children who were seriously injured by coin-operated sunbeds.

Kelly Thompson had to be treated overnight at a burns unit in Swansea and her mother wants an investigation. "The doctors told me if she had stayed on the bed two minutes longer, she may have needed skin grafts," her mother Sharon Hannaford, of Port Talbot, said.

Kitchen honey better at healing burns than standard NHS treatments, say scientists

Honey has been found to be better at aiding burn recovery than standard treatments used by the NHS, a study claims. Scientists pooled data from 19 trials involving more than 2,500 patients with a range of wounds. They found that honey was better at reducing the time it takes to recover from mild to moderate burns than some widely used gauze and film dressings.
