(The Scotsman 07/10/2009)
A FOOD bug that makes 55,000 people ill a year is present in 65 per cent of chicken on sale in the UK, research showed yesterday. Campylobacter, which causes diarrhoea, cramping and abdominal pain, was found in almost two-thirds of chicken samples tested, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) found. Salmonella was in 6 per cent of samples. The illness, which can be prevented by properly cooking meat, usually lasts one week, although some people don't show any symptoms.

(The Scotsman 30/07/2009)
A BUG that causes food poisoning has increased to its highest prevalence in nine years in Scotland. Cases of campylobacter - often called the barbecue bug because of its link to poorly cooked meat - are up almost a fifth this year, officials said. Health Protection Scotland (HPS) revealed that in the first 28 weeks of 2009, 3,033 cases of campylobacter were reported - up 19 per cent from 2,546 during the same period last year.
