Outer space technology used to save sight by spotting cataracts early

A compact fibre-optic probe developed for NASA's space programme is being used as a revolutionary eye test that detects cataracts early. The non-invasive device can spot a protein related to the condition, which is the leading cause of sight loss worldwide. In the UK, around 30 per cent of people aged 65 and over have cataracts in one or both eyes that impairs their vision.
