Bipolar experts' EastEnders help

Researchers at Cardiff University's school of medicine have been helping EastEnders scriptwriters with a storyline on manic depression. In the soap, 19-year-old Stacey Slater has been seen struggling with the symptoms of this mental illness. It becomes apparent she has similar problems to her mother. Also known as bipolar, manic depression causes serious problems in 1% of the population with patients experiencing severe mood swings.

I have been married for 15 years, and have no children. I am in my mid-forties, and my husband is 10 years older. Two years into my marriage, he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act, and diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He has been in and out of mental institutions ever since, and is more or less stabilised on medication. I am the only person in the past 15 years who has stood by him. His family and our friends dropped us like hot potatoes when his diagnosis was confirmed.
