Gum disease care 'aids arthritis'

People who have both gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis can relieve both conditions by treating their mouth infection, US researchers have found. Patients who had treatments such as scaling and improved oral hygiene also saw their arthritis symptoms lessened. Gum care plus arthritis drugs was the best combination, the Journal of Periodontology study found. Dental experts said the work supported previous research which found removing teeth could relieve arthritic pain.

South Asian children miss dentist

Children of Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani origin use NHS dental care less frequently than any other ethnic group, research shows. Three-quarters of under 16s in England have been for a check up in the last year - but the statistics are low for all British Asian groups. The Department of Health says Bangladeshi children from deprived backgrounds are the worst affected. They often consume a high amount of sugar in their diet.

Safety alert on mouthwash

CUSTOMERS were warned yesterday of safety fears over numerous brands of mouthwash. A total of 17 products were recalled after routine tests identified a "microbiological problem". The maker, Robert McBride Ltd, said people who had bought bottles should return them as a "precautionary measure". Among the products affected are Asda, Morrisons and Tesco own-brand mouthwashes, as well as Dentyl and Dentimint.
