NHS staff have a hard enough job without false TV role models
(BBC 18/11/2009)
TV hospital dramas can be exciting and entertaining but they are often filled with unprofessional behaviour, says Antony Sumara who runs the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Hospital Trust. He argues in this week's Scrubbing Up that such programmes are painting the NHS and its doctors and nurses in a poor light and not reflecting real hospital life. If you work in the NHS you either avoid NHS-based soap operas like the plague or watch them as an unofficial sofa critic.
London blocks Scotland's bid for doctors
(The Scotsman 15/11/2009)
The UK government knocked back an SNP attempt to fast-track job applications of foreign ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctors, biochemists, eye specialists and oral-surgery consultants seeking positions in Scottish hospitals. Scottish ministers have argued that a different approach to immigration is required north of the Border and had specified that consultants from outwith the EU were required in Scotland to meet critical shortages in the specialities.
Row over 'no' to NHS cash probe
(BBC 12/11/2009)
The Liberal Democrats say they are "appalled" the Welsh health minister has refused to look into claims that £1bn of NHS cash is being poorly spent. Last month, a NHS official told an committee a fifth of the £5bn annual health budget was not used correctly. Welsh Lib Dem leader Kirsty Williams is "angry and astonished" Edwina Hart rejected calls for an investigation with a one word written response, "No". The assembly government said health boards should live within their means.
Why the NHS needs cuts in duplication, not services
(BBC 11/11/2009)
The National Health Service is facing a huge budget shortfall after 2011. Former NHS clinician Julia Manning says it is time to look at the duplication of roles in the health service. The NHS was asked last financial year to start thinking about how to cut £10bn from its costs. As time has gone by that amount has increased to estimates of £15bn to £20bn required in savings. This surely has to be one of the most significant motivators for finding efficiency savings in the NHS...?
NHS boss quits over cash for grit
(BBC 09/11/2009)
An NHS governor has resigned after a primary care trust pledged £1m to help a council pay for extra road gritting. Kath Toward has quit in protest at Durham and Darlington PCT's decision to give the cash to Durham County Council in an attempt to prevent accidents. She said gritting was not a health issue and that the money should be spent on "struggling" NHS services.
Rooftop garden, cinema and private rooms in Scotland's £840m hospital
(The Scotsman 07/11/2009)
But to top it all, literally, the sick children's unit on Scotland's largest and most expensive hospital campus will have a covered roof garden with its own stage for theatrical productions. For the first time yesterday, the public was given a preview of how the vast £840 million campus will look on completion in 2015, when health secretary Nicola Sturgeon named the successful bidder for the project. The rooftop theatre will be part of the 256-bed, five-storey children's hospital.
Row erupts over state of the NHS
(BBC 05/11/2009)
A row has broken out between the government and the Conservatives over a report into the state of the NHS. Labour has hailed a think tank's review of 11 health systems as evidence its health service reforms are working. The Commonwealth Fund report, based on a poll of more than 10,000 doctors, suggested the NHS compared favourably with services in other countries. But the Tories said data on the numbers surviving disease showed the health service had got worse under Labour.
NHS told to avoid mass job cuts
(BBC 04/11/2009)
Mass redundancies in the NHS should be avoided - despite the need to make cuts because of the expected spending squeeze, bosses say. NHS Employers, which represents senior managers, urged its members to look at other ways of saving money such as targeting productivity and pay. Unions welcomed the move amid growing signs that trusts are planning to make big cuts to the 1.4m UK workforce. The health service is likely to have to make £20bn of cuts from 2011 to 2014.
NHS assaults 'not taken seriously'
(BBC 29/10/2009)
The NHS is being accused of not doing enough to protect staff from a daily barrage of punches, slaps and kicks. Despite a promise of a "zero tolerance" approach, there has only been a 0.5% increase in criminal sanctions against offenders in the last three years. Between 2004/5 and 2007/8, the number of attackers who faced punishment has risen from 1.3% of those carrying out physical assaults to 1.8%. The health union Unison says promises to get tough on offenders have failed.
