Hope over new skin cancer therapy

Scientists have presented results of an experimental new drug, PLX4032, which in early stage trials has significantly shrunk skin cancer tumours. US rearchers from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York said their results were "unprecedented". While not a cure, the study of 31 patients with late-stage skin cancer suggested the therapy could improve the quality of life and extend lifespan. Further trials required.

Scots take 'sun-fry' cancer risk

Scots have an unhealthy approach to sunbathing and the highest risk of contracting skin cancer in the UK, researchers have warned. The study by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society found some had even used baby lotion and even chip fat to get a tan. It follows figures from Cancer Research UK suggesting sunbathers from Scotland had the highest risk of contracting skin cancer in the UK. The RPS urged people to always use a high factor cream to avoid "frying".
