Ask the doctor: What has caused my painful chilblains

(Daily Mail 16/03/2009)

I am plagued with chilblains. I did suffer from them as a child, but they disappeared after treatment. Now I am 72, they have returned. I'm not on medication for any other conditions and am generally in good health. Could you please advise what causes chilblains and if there is any medication I could buy to alleviate the constant pain and itching? It also makes walking rather painful.
