Chlamydia testing 'wasting money'
(BBC 12/11/2009)
Millions of pounds have been squandered on the national chlamydia screening programme, a watchdog says. The National Audit Office said the NHS had duplicated effort and failed to test as many of the under-25 target group in England as it should have. The programme was set up in response to rising rates of the so-called silent infection - it often shows no symptoms but if left untreated can cause infertility.
GPs not promoting chlamydia tests
(BBC 16/10/2009)
GPs are not promoting chlamydia screening because they fear it will embarrass patients, researchers say. A snapshot study of 25 practices in England found most were not prominently displaying posters and leaflets. And most staff were not routinely offering tests to the target population of 15 to 24-year-olds, the BMC Public Health journal reported. The researchers said education was needed to change staff attitudes towards sexual health.
Chlamydia tests offered on beach
(BBC 06/08/2009)
Teenagers in a Dorset seaside town will be able to get tested for the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia while visiting the beach on Friday nights. It is part of a campaign by youth workers in Bournemouth to stop 13 to 19-year-olds from having sex too young. The youth club bus on the seafront will also hand out keyring condom holders. Chlamydia is the most common sexual infection with 120,000 new cases diagnosed last year. Young people accounted for two thirds of cases.
Rapid chlamydia diagnosis for men
(BBC 31/07/2009)
A urine test can diagnose the sexually transmitted infection chlamydia in men within an hour, enabling on-the-spot treatment. Chlamydia is the most common STI, and doctors are concerned at high rates of transmission, particularly among younger people aged 16-24. The infection often produces no symptoms but, if left untreated, it can seriously damage fertility. Rapid treatment would prevent it being passed to others unknowingly.

The sexually transmitted infection (STI) has no symptoms in more than half of men and 70% of women. If left untreated Chlamydia can cause major infertility problems.
Chlamydia test struggle continues
(BBC 12/06/2009)
The NHS has missed its target for chlamydia testing The screening programme in England was supposed to reach 17% of the 15 to 24 age group, but 15.9% were checked in 2008-9, official figures showed. However, the figure represents a significant improvement on the previous year when fewer than 5% were tested. Chlamydia is the most common sexual infection with 120,000 new cases diagnosed last year, with young people accounting for two thirds of them.
Shock rise in children with chlamydia
(The Scotsman 04/06/2009)
THE number of cases of some sexually transmitted diseases has increased among Scottish children in the past four years, new figures have shown. Cases of chlamydia among children aged ten to 15 increased from 249 to 318 between 2004 and 2008, and the number of young people with other conditions, such as gonorrhoea and genital warts, also rose. Lib Dem health spokesman Ross Finnie said: "These figures show that young people are not getting the message about safe sex."

Chlamydia tests offered in pubs
(BBC 19/12/2008)
Pub and club-goers are being offered Chlamydia home test kits in an effort to get more under-25s tested. The trial is being offered in three areas in London - central Ealing, Southall and Greenford. If it is successful it will be rolled out across the UK. The kits are in pub toilets, in dispensers like you get newspapers from in the street.
