Appendicitis urine test hope

(BBC 23/06/2009)

Scientists are hopeful of developing a simple urine test which will be able to detect appendicitis. The condition may be life-threatening without emergency surgery, but can be difficult to diagnose, especially in younger people. Now a team at the Children's Hospital Boston has pinpointed a protein in the urine which might be a tell tale sign of the condition. The research features online in Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Trainee surgeons should carry out more operations 'to improve safety'

(Telegraph 30/11/2008)

Operations to remove patients appendixes are as safe and almost as fast when carried out by trainee surgeons as by consultants, the results of a new study show. Experts agree that trainee surgeons should have as many hours practising on real operations as possible. But in recent years European rules have cut the number of hours that doctors can work.

Pollution linked to appendicitis

(BBC 06/10/2008)

Air pollution may increase the risk of appendicitis, research suggests. The Calgary team identified more than 45,000 adults who were hospitalised for appendicitis between 1999 and 2006. They found patients were approximately 15% more likely to be hospitalised on days of highest ozone concentrations compared to days of lowest ozone concentrations.
