Bug outbreak 'identified quickly'
(BBC 12/11/2009)
Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has said she is confident the outbreak of Clostridium difficile at a Dundee hospital was identified quickly. It emerged on Tuesday that five elderly patients had died after contracting the bug on Ward 31 at Ninewells hospital. In a statement to the Scottish Parliament, Ms Sturgeon said the outbreak occurred over three weeks, not the 10 weeks previously thought. An investigation has begun to assess infection control systems in Tayside.
SNP accused of covering up C diff deaths
(The Scotsman 12/11/2009)
THE Scottish Government was accused last night of a "cover-up" over a hospital bug outbreak in which five patients died. However, the government said patients and their families were kept "fully informed" at all times. The Clostridium difficile infection killed two patients and contributed to the deaths of three others in a ward at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. The outbreak was declared on 19 October, and the Scottish Government was informed two days later.
C difficile outbreak at Scots hospital leaves five patients dead
(The Scotsman 11/11/2009)
FIVE patients have died in an outbreak of the Clostridium difficile bug in a Scottish hospital, it emerged yesterday. NHS Tayside revealed that eight elderly patients had been struck with the infection on a ward in Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. The outbreak led to two patients dying with C difficile as their main cause of death, with three more deaths where it was a contributory factor. The latest deaths follow a number of C difficile outbreaks in Scottish hospitals in recent years.
C. diff rise due to 'gene switch'
(BBC 28/09/2009)
The rise in Clostridium difficile infections in recent years is due to genetic changes rather than dirty hospitals, say UK researchers. Comparison of an historic strain and a strain from the outbreak at Stoke Mandeville hospital in 2003 found it had evolved to be more virulent. It can spread more easily and cause more severe symptoms, the team reports in Genome Biology journal. NHS trusts have a target to cut C. difficile infections by 30% by 2010/11.
Government blasted over 'too narrow' C diff probe
(The Scotsman 05/09/2009)
THE Scottish Government has been accused of attempting to "straitjacket" an inquiry into a deadly hospital bug outbreak. Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon announced that a public inquiry into Clostridium difficile will focus on the outbreak at the Vale of Leven Hospital in West Dunbartonshire last year, which resulted in 18 deaths. It can "refer" to other cases in Scotland %u2013 but opposition parties say this is too narrow and called for it to be widened.
Lockerbie judge to head inquiry into deadly hospital bug
(The Scotsman 22/08/2009)
A NEW chairman has been appointed to head the inquiry into an outbreak of the hospital bug Clostridium difficile which was linked to the deaths of 18 patients. Retired judge Lord MacLean will replace Lord Coulsfield, who stepped down for health reasons, it was announced. Lord MacLean was one of the judges at the Lockerbie trial. He will now lead the investigation into the C difficile outbreak at the Vale of Leven hospital. Nine died and the bug was a contributory factor in nine other deaths.
C diff bug kills five patients every week
(The Scotsman 08/08/2009)
CALLS for a wider inquiry into hospital infections have intensified after the Clostridium difficile bug was listed as the main cause of death in 248 patients in Scotland in 2008 - up from 220 the previous year. This equates to five patients a week dying as a direct result of the bug, which was also listed as a contributory factor in a further ten deaths every week. There are now more fatalities linked to C difficile in Scotland's hospitals than on our roads.
Superbug killed 18 in Gartnavel Hospital last year
(The Scotsman 29/07/2009)
HEALTH Secretary Nicola Sturgeon was today urged to act after it emerged that 18 people died in a hospital inside a year from the Clostridium difficile bug. The deaths in Glasgow's Gartnavel Hospital occurred in 2008 - a further 10 people there died from C diff the year before. The health board area includes Vale of Leven Hospital where nine people died from the bug during a six-month outbreak last year - prompting Ms Sturgeon to order an inquiry.
No prosecutions over C. diff cases
(BBC 24/06/2009)
There are to be no criminal proceedings over a fatal outbreak of Clostridium difficile (C.diff) at a Dunbartonshire hospital in which 18 people died. In total, 55 patients were infected by the bug at the Vale of Leven Hospital between December 2007 and June 2008. The Crown Office decided not to pursue any prosecutions following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive and Strathclyde Police. The families of those affected by the outbreak have been informed.
