NHS reform 'left dentists behind'
(BBC 13/10/2009)
NHS dentistry has been left behind in the drive to improve the health service, dental leaders say. The British Dental Association said while hospitals and GPs had largely solved access problems, the issue was still dogging dentistry in England. A report by the union said there was so little information available on local people that they did not know who they needed to focus their efforts on. NHS dentistry has been a long-running problem for the government.
NHS dental crisis: Can the rot be stopped?
(Telegraph 25/09/2009)
As new figures reveal over 40 per cent of the population has no NHS dentist can a new review finally fix the system once and for all? Data from the NHS Information Centre released last month shows that only 58.3 per cent of the population saw an NHS dentist in the two years ending March 2009, with the number of complex treatments, such as root canals and crowns, falling dramatically, by 40 and 50 per cent respectively, since 2004.
Town to lose its last NHS dentist
(BBC 22/09/2009)
The last NHS dental surgery in a town in Cornwall has announced it is to become a private practice. In a letter to patients, Saltash Dental Surgery said it could no longer carry on with its NHS dental contract and it was to become private in November. The surgery has operated in the town for about 14 years. Cornwall's Primary Care Trust (PCT) said local people had other options and it was planning to open a new practice offering NHS work from next spring.
Should we be paying more for NHS dentistry?
(BBC 16/09/2009)
Professor Jimmy Steele, author of the Government's last dental review, says the over 40s are straining the NHS dentistry budget. Many of the complex procedures they want like root canal and crowns are not really "needed" and higher patient charges may allow the NHS to provide a more extensive service to a larger number of people .
More Scots children on dentists' books
(The Scotsman 29/08/2009)
THE number of children in Scotland registered with an NHS dentist has risen to its highest ever level. Figures show the number of children aged three to five registered with a dentist has risen nearly 15 per cent in the last two years, to 80 per cent. Public health minister Shona Robison said strategies to encourage parents to register their children were working.
NHS dentists on £300,000 a year
(The Scotsman 21/08/2009)
THE number of dentists earning more than £300,000 a year from treating NHS patients in Scotland has trebled in the last five years, according to figures obtained by The Scotsman. A total of 24 dentists were revealed in the profession's top NHS income bracket during 2008-9, figures from statisticians revealed. But the figures do not include extra earnings from private patients or payments for items such as rent, sickness and remote area allowances.
NHS dentist patient numbers fall
(BBC 19/08/2009)
The proportion of the population who were treated by an NHS dentist in the last two years has fallen since the service was overhauled, data shows. But both the number of NHS dentists and treatments provided in England did rise in 2008/2009 from the previous year. However data from the NHS Information Centre shows complex treatments, like crowns, have fallen dramatically. A new dental contract, introduced in 2006, has been heavily criticised and is now to be revamped itself.
Many dentists earn over £200,000
(BBC 04/08/2009)
Nearly 1,200 dentists in England and Wales earned over £200,000 in the financial year 2007-08, official figures show. The NHS Information Centre statistics show 382 dentists - nearly 2% of the total - earned more than £300,000 in the year. Average take home pay for the 19,586 registered dentists was £89,062. The Liberal Democrats said the figures would "astonish people" who were still seeking NHS dental care.
Dental care changes report due
(BBC 22/06/2009)
The findings of a review into how dental services in England should change are to be published later. The independent review, ordered by ministers, will consider the continuing problems in access to NHS dentists. It will also look at how dentists are funded, and how to ensure high-quality NHS dental care. A spokeswoman for the British Dental Association said it was "vital" to address the problems which existed for doctors and patients.
