Plane toxins 'brain damage link'
(BBC 24/09/2009)
Toxins found in the air systems of commercial airliners have been linked to neurological damage suffered by pilots, the BBC has learned. Campaigners say pilots and cabin crew have developed debilitating chronic medical conditions after being exposed to fume contamination from jet engines. It is estimated that as many as 200,000 UK travellers a year may be affected. But aircraft manufacturers BAe and Boeing say air supplies in their planes meet health and safety standards.
Road particles pose 'higher risk'
(BBC 09/06/2009)
Children may be at greater risk from the microscopic particles in traffic pollution than was previously thought. Early findings from a major study in London seen by the BBC show that the lung capacity of 8- and 9-year-olds is 5% lower than the national average. And 7% of the children - surveyed in the Tower Hamlets area - have lung function reduced to a level internationally regarded as hazardous. The London study is being led by Professor Jonathan Grigg.
(BBC 12/04/2009)
It has taken a quarter of a century, but US researchers say their work has finally enabled them to determine to what extent city air pollution impacts on average life expectancy. The project tracked the change of air quality in 51 American cities since the 1980s. During that time general life expectancy increased by more than two and half years, much due to improved lifestyles, diet and healthcare. But the researchers calculated more than 15% of that extra time was due to cleaner air.
Cleaner air 'adds months to life'
(BBC 22/01/2009)
Cuts in air pollution in US cities over recent decades have added an average of five months of life to their inhabitants, research suggests. The New England Journal of Medicine study matched air pollution and life expectancy statistics from 51 cities between 1980 and 2000. Scientists found people living 2.72 years longer by 2000 - 15% of which they attributed to falls in pollution.
Third runway will 'damage health'
(BBC 06/10/2008)
A third runway at Heathrow Airport would be "very detrimental" to Londoners' health, according to the new head of the Environment Agency (EA). Lord Smith of Finsbury said the government had lost track of the green issues and said a new runway would fail EU air pollution limits. But ministers insisted that any Heathrow expansion would have to meet strict local environment conditions.
Ozone pollution 'killing hundreds'
(The Scotsman 06/10/2008)
GROUND-LEVEL ozone pollution is contributing to hundreds of deaths a year in the UK - and climate change could make matters worse, the Royal Society will warn today. Its study says background ozone levels have been growing by 6 per cent a decade since the 1980s.
Pollution 'hinders heart pacing'
(BBC 10/09/2008)
Air pollution from traffic hinders the heart's ability to conduct electrical signals, a study concludes. Exposure to small particulates - tiny chemicals caused by burning fossil fuels - caused worrying changes on the heart traces of 48 heart patients.

Pollution 'lifts blood clot risk'
(BBC 13/05/2008)
Deep Vein Thrombosis risk: Breathing in air pollution from traffic fumes can raise the risk of potentially deadly blood clots, a US study says.
