MRSA 'not the only threat to NHS'

(BBC 10/11/2009)

The government has taken its "eye off the ball" on hospital infections other than MRSA and Clostridium difficile, a cross-party group of MPs says. The Public Accounts Committee said setting targets in England for the two infections had led to a fall in cases. But they warned there were signs other bugs, such as E. coli, were becoming more common and they called for better surveillance to curb the problem. The Department of Health said it was already looking into the issue.

(The Scotsman 07/11/2009)

SIR Elton John is out of hospital and feeling "fine" after being struck down with a bout of flu and an E coli bacterial infection. Sir Elton's spokesman said the singer, 62, had checked out late on Wednesday and planned to resume his tour. Sir Elton has postponed gigs in Sheffield, Newcastle, London, Liverpool and Dublin since 23 October, when he contracted flu

Baby's voice 'saved coma mother'

(BBC 07/10/2009)

A woman who was in an induced coma after contracting E. coli says the sound of her baby's voice helped to pull her through her ordeal. Karen Morrisroe-Clutton, aged 32, a librarian from Wrexham, was affected by the bug at the end of July when her son Oliver was 10 weeks old. She said she had "wanted to die", but after hearing Oliver's voice she decided: "I need to live". At the time, The Llay Fish Bar in the town was named as the likely source of infection in four people.

At its public meeting today the Health Protection Agency's Board agreed the terms of reference for the independent investigation into the outbreak of E.coli O157 at Godstone Farm to be led by George Griffin, Professor of Infectious Diseases and Medicine at St. George's, University of London and Chair of the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens.

'Keep toddlers from animals' call

(BBC 19/09/2009)

Parents should not allow under-fives to touch animals at petting farms, a microbiologist has said amid E.coli fears involving four sites. Professor Hugh Pennington said they were "most likely to touch the animals" and "the most difficult part of the population to get to wash their hands". Professor Pennington also called for a review of guidelines on petting farms. Closure of parts of a Devon farm on Friday made it the fourth attraction forced to shut owing to E.coli fears.

'Doomsday bug' creeping closer

(The Scotsman 19/09/2009)

DOCTORS are growing increasingly concerned about a rising number of infections in Scotland that have developed the ability to resist antibiotics. Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are enzymes that can be produced by bacteria, including E coli, leading to resistance to common drugs. Aberdeen University consultant microbiologist Dr Ian Gould said in the past few years in Scotland the proportion of cases of ESBLs associated with infections such as E coli had risen from zero to 20%.

'No-one to blame' for E coli outbreak that killed grandmother

(The Scotsman 28/08/2009)

A SHERIFF has ruled no-one is to blame for the death of a grandmother who lost her life following a deadly E coli outbreak. Margaret Rowan, 66, died and her husband Stephen, 74, was left in a critical condition in hospital during the scare. Two Morrisons supermarkets in Paisley, Renfrewshire, were linked to the outbreak and it was believed contaminated cold meat was the source of the bug. Mrs Rowan, of Paisley, was admitted to the town's Royal Alexandra Hospital in August 2007.

(BBC 07/08/2009)

The mother of a woman who is in intensive care after an E.coli outbreak says there are signs of improvement in her daughter's condition. Karen Morrisroe-Clutton, 32, remains in a serious condition at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. She is one of four people who have the same strain of the bug. Rose Morrisroe said her daughter was off dialysis and the sedation of her medically-induced coma has reduced.
